On May 2, members of the community appeared before the OSSU School Board and shared very personal and powerful statements about the existence of racism in our schools. These statements contained numerous personal examples of racist comments and actions perpetrated by students, faculty, administrators and community members
against students of color. Our school system’s historic ineffective responses to the existence of racism in our schools has only furthered these injustices.
For this we extend our deepest apologies. We pledge to work with the administration and members of the community to take immediate and intentional action to change the culture within our school system so that no one - no child, no parent and no member of this community feels the kind of fear, isolation, or invisibility that these students and their parents have experienced.
We appreciate and thank the individuals who spoke that night. They displayed unwavering courage and commitment. We are grateful for their faith in us to do better and their commitment to help us. They are correct - racism hurts all of us - we can only thrive as a community of learners when everyone thrives.
Again, our sincerest apologies,
The OSSU School Board
